Walgreens Shooting Tied to Suspect’s Grudge Against Pharmacies

An employee was shot and killed during a workplace Walgreens shooting on Monday, March 31. Authorities say the gunman, now in custody, expressed hatred toward large pharmacy chains, turning his grievance into deadly violence.

The incident occurred just before closing at a Walgreens in Madera, CA. The suspect entered the store armed, destroyed a surveillance camera, and opened fire. One employee, Erick Velazquez, was killed. Two others were targeted but managed to escape.

Police say the shooter did not know any of the employees.

  • The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m., as the store was preparing to close.
  • Surveillance footage shows the suspect waving at the camera before shooting it out.
  • He fatally shot one employee and then fired at others as they ran.
  • Responding officers found him reloading his gun in the parking lot. He was arrested without further incident.

Inside the store, customers and staff were sheltering in place. One employee had locked themselves in the bathroom. No one else was physically harmed.

The victim, Erick Velazquez, was a father of two. He worked on the retail side of the store, not in the pharmacy.

The suspect pleaded not guilty to all charges. His bail was set at $3 million.

Motive Behind the Walgreens Shooting

The suspect allegedly told investigators that he had a long-standing grudge against pharmacies.

According to police, he described “hatred for big pharmacy chains” and expressed anger over how these institutions operate. The shooting was not tied to a robbery, dispute, or any personal connection to the victim.

It appears that the store and the people inside were chosen simply for what they represented.

Walgreens Shooting Tied to Suspect’s Grudge Against PharmaciesWhen Ideology Fuels Violence in Everyday Places

In recent years, TAL Global has tracked a rise in grievance-driven attacks, where individuals act on resentment or perceived injustice, often aimed at institutions, symbols of authority, or entire industries.

We’ve seen this before:

The common thread is emotional volatility paired with symbolism. Sometimes, the target isn’t a person. It’s a concept.

What Makes These Attacks So Difficult to Predict

  • There’s often no direct connection between the attacker and the victim.
  • The grievance is broad and abstract, rooted in ideology, not events.
  • Targets are chosen symbolically, not personally.
  • Perpetrators may appear calm or rehearsed until the moment they act.

These types of incidents are harder to spot in advance. But that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to prepare for.

Steps organizations can take now to reduce risk and improve response readiness:

  • Facility Security Assessments
Evaluate perimeter security, access control, policy gaps, and staff preparedness.
  • Workplace Violence Training + Situational Awareness
Train all employees, but especially, managers to identify early signs of workplace violence and ideological resentment or behavioral shifts.
  • Active Shooter Training
Ensure every team member knows what to do in an active shooter or lockdown situation.
  • Security Countermeasures and Surveillance Redundancy
Use security countermeasures appropriately and in the correct locations. With cameras, use multiple angles and cloud backups to prevent blind spots or single-point failure.
  • Assess Employee Risk
Review when and how customer-facing staff are exposed — especially after hours.
  • Local Law Enforcement Partnerships
Build relationships before a crisis. Share site layouts and key contact points.

Preparation Saves Lives

The victim in this crime wasn’t a pharmacist. He wasn’t involved in a confrontation. He was simply there, doing his job, when a man acting on an abstract grudge chose to make a point with a gun.

Organizations need to understand this shift. Grievance doesn’t always look loud. Ideological motives don’t always come with a manifesto.

Every layer of preparation adds protection. Let’s build yours.
