Insights from TAL Global’s Managing Directors on the Future of Security and Risk
What threats are emerging, and what will shape the way individuals, organizations, and nations manage risk? TAL Global’s senior advisors share their perspective on what’s coming and what leaders must be ready for.
These are professionals who have shaped crisis responses for governments, designed risk strategies for Fortune 500 companies, and guided organizations through the most volatile moments of the last two decades.
Oscar Villanueva, Chief Operating Officer at TAL Global, examines how social media and AI have been, and will continue to, reshape the security and risk management landscape, amplifying behavioral threats and transforming how investigations and response strategies are executed.
Social Media’s “Authority”
Social media is now baked into daily life, and that includes security. Right now, more than 5.2 billion people use it, about 64 percent of the world’s population. In the United States, Facebook and YouTube lead the way as news sources, with about a third of adults getting their news from each.
In a world where information spreads instantly, misinformation moves faster than facts. By the time something is corrected, the damage is usually done.
The growth and dissemination of negative emotions and behavior-impacting messages will become, according to Oscar, central to businesses’ ability to perform successful threat assessment and mitigation. For security teams, that means knowing how to track signals before something escalates. That starts with social media.
“Every serious security operation in the coming years will include a social media component. We live in an Instant Society. People are more isolated, less patient, and quicker to act out when something pushes them.”
Social media systems are built to keep people engaged, and they often do that by promoting content that triggers strong emotional reactions. Outrage, fear, and conflict tend to rise to the top because they hold attention. Over time, that constant exposure builds tension and erodes patience. From a security perspective, this creates an environment where emotional volatility is heightened and harder to track.
Algorithms are part of the risk picture now, and security teams need to account for that influence when assessing threats and planning response strategies.
AI’s Impact on the Future of Security and Risk Management
AI is here to stay, it’s a fundamental shift. According to Oscar, it’s not unlike the leap from horses to cars or the emergence of the internet. Some still dismiss it, but that mindset will put organizations at a disadvantage fast. The priority now is to understand the tools, get comfortable using them, and apply them where they give you an edge.
“When criminals started using cars, law enforcement didn’t keep chasing them on horses, they got in cars too. Same idea here. You’ve got to work with the tools that are out there, or you get left behind. Just think about what happened with the internet. Big names like Kodak, Sears, Yellow Cab, the Yellow Pages: they didn’t move fast enough, and they got replaced.”
AI brings real opportunity to strengthen security and risk management in meaningful ways. Some of the clearest use cases include:
- Pattern recognition at scale
- Predictive risk modeling
- Automated investigation support
- Threat intelligence correlation
- Real-time decision support
- Training simulations and risk education
But as useful as AI is for defenders, it also opens new doors for attackers. These include:
- Weaponized deepfakes and social engineering
- The spread of disinformation at scale
- Bypassing Traditional Detection
- Automated Reconnaissance
- Generative tools that can produce phishing kits, ransomware scripts, or scam narratives on demand
Both sides are evolving.
AI-based tools are already changing how investigations work. They can process massive amounts of data in seconds, spot patterns that would take humans days to uncover, and surface early warning signs before a situation escalates. The ability to accelerate investigations, identify potential perpetrators, and flag emerging risks is becoming a critical edge in both physical and digital security, and possibly mitigate against disruptions even before they occur.
Oscar sees real value in the rise of AI agents, software that can assist with triage, analysis, and reporting, but only if they’re implemented thoughtfully.
“The nature of investigations is likely to change considerably, as purpose-built AI apps join the investigator’s toolbox,” he says. “Of course, the advantage will be in the ability to use the technology properly and ethically.”
But the same power that helps defenders also helps attackers.
Oscar is clear on this: criminals are already using AI to blackmail, steal, extract ransom, and automate fraud. They’re scraping data, generating fake content, and moving money across borders faster than most legacy systems can track. These are not only the future of security and risk. They’re happening now.
The organizations that stay ahead will be the ones that actively integrate AI into their risk strategy. That means investing in the tools, but also in the know-how to use them responsibly.
