A suspect in the Minnesota shooting of two state lawmakers and their spouses is now in custody following a two-day manhunt which included the use of drones, a helicopter and infrared technology. He was captured in a wooded field near his home, surrendering without incident and was charged with two counts each of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder.
Timeline of the Minnesota Shooting
Around 2am: The suspect arrived at the home of State Senator John Hoffman wearing tactical clothing, body armor, and a police-style badge, carrying a 9mm pistol. He knocked loudly and repeatedly announced, “This is the police, open the door.” When Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, opened the door, they quickly realized the suspect was wearing a realistic full-face disguise. A violent confrontation ensued, during which the suspect shot both repeatedly. Police arrived within minutes after a 911 call from the Hoffmans’ adult daughter.
20 minutes later: Security footage showed the suspect at the home of another public official, again wearing a mask and tactical gear. He knocked and announced he had a warrant, but left after finding no one home.
Around 2:30am: The suspect arrived at another legislator’s residence but was deterred after encountering a police officer dispatched for a safety check. Initially, the officer was fooled by the suspect’s vehicle, which resembled a police car. After confirming the legislator was safe and no disturbance was occurring, the officer doubled back to the scene. By then, the suspect had already fled.
Around 3:30am: Officers arrived at State Representative Melissa Hortman’s home, where the suspect’s fake police vehicle with flashing lights was parked. The suspect, positioned at the front door, fired gunshots upon officers’ arrival, entered the home, and shot Mark and Melissa Hortman. Mark was found gravely injured at the doorway; Melissa was found inside the house. Both later died from their injuries. The suspect fled the scene out the back of the house.
Following the shootings, law enforcement recovered multiple firearms, tactical gear, the suspect’s mask and pistol, and a detailed list of 50 to 70 names believed to be part of a broader, premeditated plan of notable figures and lawmakers targeted. Authorities believed the suspect was on foot after abandoning his vehicle.
What We Know About the Attacker
The individual had a long-standing fascination with law enforcement and military culture. Friends and former associates described him as obsessed with these personas, noting he had purchased vehicles modified to resemble police units and frequently talked about launching a private security firm.
Online, he claimed to be the founder of a company called Praetorian Guard Security Services, LLC, and portrayed himself as a security professional with military training. However, no official records or client activity support those claims, and acquaintances suggested many of his self-described qualifications were exaggerated or entirely fabricated.
In recent years, friends also noted he faced financial difficulties. In 2023, he took a job with a transport service linked to a funeral home, primarily responsible for picking up bodies from assisted-living facilities. That employment reportedly ended several months ago.
Public records confirm he held an appointed, unpaid position on Minnesota’s Governor’s Workforce Development Board under two different administrations.
This attack marks a chilling escalation. Yet another calculated attack, but now carried out in the middle of the night, at the victim’s front door, impersonating law enforcement. They were targeted deliberately, deceitfully, and without warning.
For those in a high-profile position, the lesson is sobering. If someone comes to your home at 2 a.m. with a plan to kill, no one’s going to reach you in time. Not the police. Not your neighbors. In that moment, the only thing that matters is being situationally aware and having a plan to properly react, including whether you took steps ahead of time to prepare, control access, anticipate risk, and have contingencies in place to give yourself a fighting chance.
The Game Has Changed
We’ve warned for years about a modern-day shift in how grievances are acted out. Individuals with a bone to pick, whether political, ideological, or personal, are increasingly targeting people who symbolize their anger.
Just six months ago, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was murdered in his office. Now we’re seeing lawmakers targeted in their homes. This trend is accelerating, not fading.
Over the past two days, we’ve heard from CEOs, media personalities, nonprofit leaders, activists, and high-profile individuals: from sports to politics to social advocacy. They’re all asking the same question: “What do I need to do to make sure this doesn’t happen to me or my family?”
We tell them what we’ll tell you: the landscape has shifted. Grievance, supercharged by social media, is turning perceived slights into real-world threats. Security today needs to blend battle-tested experience with a clear understanding of the modern threat landscape.
What Smart Leaders Should Be Doing Now
- Rethink Access: In this case, the attacker knocked at 2am when instincts are dull and reaction time is slow. The UnitedHealth CEO was gunned down on a sidewalk in the early morning. Both were hit when their guard was down. Real risk isn’t always loud or obvious, or “scheduled” during business hours. It starts with proximity and accessibility. Just because you’re not paying attention doesn’t mean the people watching you aren’t.
- Reassess Your Symbolism: You might not think you’re a target, but someone else might. If you represent authority, policy, influence, or success, you can become a symbol. And in today’s outrage economy, symbols draw fire; whether you asked for it or not. You don’t have to take a stand. You don’t even have to know what set someone off. Visibility alone can make you the focal point of someone else’s grievance. That attention doesn’t stay online. It shows up in the real world.
- Rehearse the What-If: Awareness and smart decisions can stop threats before they ever reach your door. But that only works if you put in the time. Preparation isn’t just a camera or a bodyguard—it’s a mindset. It means having hard conversations, walking through real scenarios, and being honest about your blind spots. Your potential attacker has a plan. The question is do you?

If you’re in the public eye, manage a big brand, run a high-profile nonprofit, or carry weight in the courtroom or boardroom, you need to be thinking about this, especially now, with lawmakers targeted in their own homes.
