Hurricane Helene, The Cost of Being Unprepared, and 5 Questions Every Leader Should Ask

As Hurricane Milton heads towards the mainland, many are haunted by the devastation left by Hurricane Helene, even as recovery efforts are still ongoing.

One of the deadliest storms to strike the U.S. mainland in recent history, Helene left an unimaginable human toll in its wake. The storm has claimed over 220 lives across six states, leaving hundreds more injured or missing. Entire communities have been destroyed and washed away: some will likely never recover. Families across the southeast United States are mourning loved ones taken by the storm, and many are left to wonder: could these heartbreaking losses have been prevented?

One such incident took place at Impact Plastics in Erwin, Tennessee, which has come under scrutiny due to the harrowing fate of several of its workers. As the nearby Nolichucky River swelled from relentless rainfall, 11 of them were swept away by the surging floodwaters. Jacob Ingram, a worker at the factory stated that managers wouldn’t give them permission to leave and only allowed them to briefly move their cars from the rising waters

In stark contrast, two nearby companies successfully evacuated before the situation became life-threatening. Foam Products Corporation closed entirely on Sept. 26 and instructed workers to stay home, while Old Hickory Buildings, located north of Impact Plastics, closely monitored National Weather Service alerts and sent staff home by 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 27, before the floodwaters reached dangerous levels.

The stranded workers faced unimaginable choices as the waters rose around them. Some attempted to flee, while others sought high ground or large vehicles, some clung for life for up to six hours while continually making calls to an overwhelmed 911 system or saying their goodbyes to loved ones. Several were eventually ripped away into the current.

Aftermath, Reflection, and Lessons Learned

Hurricane Helene, The Cost of Being Unprepared, and 5 Questions Every Leader Should AskGerald O’Connor, the founder of Impact Plastics, has released a video statement addressing the recent tragedy, in part stating-

“Due to death threats against me and my family, and to reduce the stress on local law enforcement that now needs to be focused on recovery operations, I’m with you by this video… we are heartbroken as you are about our loss and keep those that have now passed in our hearts forever.”

O’Connor has ordered an immediate review of the events and timeline of that day and noted that, with assistance from the National Guard, five employees were rescued by helicopter. He further asserts that there was time to escape and that he was among the last to leave the premises, adding, “To our knowledge, no one perished while on company property.”

In addition to the video, Impact Plastics released a statement expressing heartfelt sympathy for the employees lost or missing due to the flood. The company stated that employees were dismissed in time to reach safety and clarified that no one was told they would face consequences if they left the facility.

Hurricane Helene, The Cost of Being Unprepared, and 5 Questions Every Leader Should AskThe Importance of Preparedness

A strong emergency preparedness plan can make all the difference when disaster hits, ensuring that staff, customers, and visitors can act quickly and safely. Yet, for many, preparedness remains an afterthought, dismissed as an unnecessary cost—until it’s too late. The tragedy of the Impact Plastics workers is a stark example.

A truly effective preparedness plan goes beyond a basic outline or simply “winging it.” The more people involved, the more variables there are to consider. When disaster strikes, it brings pressure, stress, and fear, leaving little time to react. That’s why your plan must be tailored to your organization’s unique risks, locations, and needs. Beyond just having a plan, you need well-practiced procedures and expert insights to ensure safety is always prioritized.

You need the right people, with the right experience, enacting the right plan.

Five Essential Questions to Consider

  • Are our evacuation policies truly built to protect everyone on-site in a crisis?
Often, policies look solid on paper but fall short in practice. In an emergency, are your evacuation plans clear, comprehensive, and responsive enough to safeguard everyone—from full-time employees to temporary staff and visitors?
  • How strong is our communication during emergencies?
Effective communication can mean survival. Are emergency instructions accessible to everyone, and does each individual understand them? In times of panic, clear, direct guidance is critical.
  • Do we monitor real-time emergency alerts, and can we act on them immediately?
With modern technology, being aware of an unfolding crisis is easier than ever—but awareness isn’t enough. Is there a system in place for quick, coordinated action based on real-time conditions?
  • When was our last emergency drill, and was it realistic?
A plan is only as strong as your last drill. Realistic practice ensures that people know exactly what to do under pressure, reducing panic and confusion when every second counts.
  • Are we viewing emergency preparedness as a wise investment or an expendable expense?
Safety is invaluable. Emergency planning might seem like a costly investment until tragedy strikes—then it becomes priceless. Are you dedicating the necessary resources to protect your people and operations effectively?

Hurricane Helene has been a sobering lesson for many across the country. For business owners, leaders, and heads of institutions, this tragedy is a call to action: Emergency preparedness cannot be delayed or disregarded.
