California Governor Announces, “State of Hate” Appointments

Campbell, CA – September 29, 2022 – California Governor Gavin Newsom has just announced his appointments to California’s new State of Hate Commission.

The Commission was created last year by state legislators and signed by Newsom. The Commission has three primary functions:

  1. Track hate crimes in California.
  2. Provide resources for victims of hate crimes.
  3. Make policy recommendations to help reduce hate crimes in the state and protect civil rights.

So, we are all on the same page, a hate crime is defined as a crime against a person, group, or property, motivated by a person’s race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or association with another person or group.

One of those appointed to the Commission is Dr. Errol G. Southers of Los Angeles. Dr. Southers is a Managing Director at TAL Global, an international security and risk consulting organization based in Silicon Valley. He is also Associate Senior Vice President of Safety and Risk Assurance at the University of Southern California since 2022.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Southers was Assistant Chief of Police commanding the Office of Homeland Security and Intelligence at Los Angeles World Airports.

“I don’t believe Governor Newsom could have appointed a more qualified person to the Commission,” says Johnathan Tal, CEO of TAL Global. “Over the years, Erroll has proven his commitment to civil rights, public safety, and developing proven ways to reduce crimes and violence.”

Along with Southers, the Governor also appointed:

  • Cynthia Choi, Co-director of Chinese for Affirmative Action and Stop AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders) Hate.
  • Brian Levin, Founding Director at the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism and a professor of criminology at California State University.
  • Bamby Salcedo, President, and Chief Executive Officer at the TransLatin@ Coalition.
  • Shirin Sinnar, Professor at Stanford Law School.
