Security Details Podcast Episode 2
Corporate investigations can stop too early. The first facts can look complete long before the full picture emerges.
A concern is raised. HR, legal, compliance, or security reviews what is available. The facts seem to line up well enough. There is pressure to resolve the issue, close the file, and move forward.
A decision is made. The organization moves on.
But in corporate investigations, especially when senior leadership is involved, the first version is not always the full story.
Even when there is a strong desire to turn the page, key information may still be sitting in mobile phones, email records, deleted files, background details, or interviews that have not happened yet. Employees may hesitate to speak openly. Internal relationships may shape what people notice, question, or avoid.
When Should a Company Hire an Outside Investigator?
An independent corporate investigator can help the organization step back from internal dynamics, follow the evidence across digital records, interviews, background research, audit trails, and company-issued devices, and identify what still needs to be tested before leadership, legal, HR, compliance, or the board acts on the findings.
When a company is investigating a CEO or another senior executive, allegations involving possible misconduct, conflicts of interest, deleted evidence, public scrutiny, or questions about what decision-makers were told should trigger a harder look at whether the investigation is sufficiently independent.
The McDonald’s CEO scandal involving former CEO Steve Easterbrook shows why the scope and depth of an investigation matter.
At first, the executive misconduct case appeared to involve one inappropriate relationship with an employee. McDonald’s acted, and the matter seemed resolved.
Then an anonymous tip led the company to reopen the investigation.
The second look raised deeper questions involving deleted material, undisclosed relationships, digital evidence, and what the board had been told before making its first decision.
For boards, executives, HR, legal, compliance, and security teams, the practical question is whether the organization has enough credible, tested information to make a decision that will hold up later.
If the answer is uncertain, outside investigators may help close the gap.
In the second episode of Security Details, TAL Global’s business security podcast, we walk through the McDonald’s case using a true crime lens. Mike Keenan then speaks with licensed California private investigator Josh Prentiss about corporate investigations, digital evidence, interviews, background checks, senior leadership risk, and why independence can matter when allegations reach the top.
