Knife Wielding Man Targets Pastor During Service, What Happens Next?

The evening service was calm. Families sat in the pews, and prayers filled the air. A man stood up and started walking toward the altar. At first, nothing seemed unusual. But then, his pace quickened. A glint of metal in his hand… a knife. He closed in and lunged towards the pastor…

This isn’t a hypothetical scenario or a scene from a movie, this happened last month, at Holy Ghost Parish in Winnipeg. And how do you think it turned out? What would have happened if there was a knife wielding man in your house of worship?

Knife Wielding Man Targets Pastor During Service, What Happens Next?Three Security Questions Every House of Worship Should Ask

For scenarios like these, there are three critical security questions every faith leader and congregation must consider. And because we’re talking about a church, mosque, synagogue, or temple, etc., balancing openness and security is key; these places should feel welcoming, but that doesn’t mean they have to be vulnerable. The challenge is finding the right measures that enhance safety and security without disrupting the sense of community. So, let’s talk about it.

How did the attacker get that close?

Think about it. The attacker walked straight up to the altar, knife in hand. Nobody stopped him. Nobody questioned his approach. Why?

The best protection comes from trained awareness, smart positioning, and controlled access to key areas. Who is paying attention? Who has eyes on the room? There are ways to maintain hospitality while still noticing when something isn’t right.

In a moment of crisis, does everyone know what to do?

When an attack happens, instinct takes over, but is instinct enough? In a split second, people either act, freeze, or panic. Is there a plan? Have people practiced it enough to act in a moment where the adrenaline is pumping and people are freaking out?

Who is designated to respond? Who moves, who stays put, who calls for help? A well-prepared response is about ensuring everyone knows their role before a crisis happens.

How Fast Can You React When Seconds Matter?

A bad haircut might be embarrassing, but it’ll grow back. Bad or loose security? That can be deadly.

A strong defense is about reacting faster than the attackers can escalate. The difference between a close call and a catastrophe often comes down to a few seconds. The attacker in Winnipeg reached the altar. He pulled a knife and was right next to the pastor, too much time had passed. No amount of regret can make up for preparation in the eyes of a threat.

Knife Wielding Man Targets Pastor During Service, What Happens Next?A Lucky Break or a Warning?

So, what happened? Luckily the pastor ran away unharmed from the knife wielding man,  and the attacker, instead of pursuing, drove his weapon into the altar and sat down. An RCMP officer, who happened to be in the congregation, stepped in with others to subdue him.

Then came the unsettling news. The attacker had been discharged from a hospital just weeks earlier, despite warning medical staff that he was hearing voices telling him to kill a priest. There was no way the church could have known, yet this serves as a reminder: houses of worship don’t have to seek attention or engage in controversy to become targets.

This could have been catastrophic. Assuming safety and security without preparation is a dangerous mistake. If the attacker had stayed aggressive, the outcome could have been far worse. Maybe this was just a lucky break. We think it serves as an important warning to have a plan.
