This year is wearing people down.
The friction is constant. Online, at work, in everyday conversations, it’s palpable. Angry rhetoric trends hourly, reporting on the American divide in beliefs, identity, and behavior.
Civil unrest and tribal tension spills into even the formerly benign: logo changes, casting decisions, celebrity headlines, and turning them into flashpoints.
What starts as noise in the culture can catch fire fast and turn into more than just talk, landing on your business without warning.
One post. One decision. One headline. Suddenly, you’re the target.
We’ve seen capable organizations get blindsided, not because they were careless, but because the situation moved faster than their response.
Once the momentum starts, civil unrest doesn’t care who’s responsible. It doesn’t wait for facts. It doesn’t consider context. It just shows up.
Maybe it’s a protest that was supposed to stay peaceful.
Maybe it’s an encounter with law enforcement that spins out of control.
Maybe it’s someone online dragging your business or name into a story you didn’t write.
The spark could be anything. It doesn’t matter. Once it starts, it moves fast and it turns unpredictable quickly.
Fear or panic are a recipe for disaster.
That’s exactly why you need to stay informed and prepared.
Civil Unrest Checklist – 4 Things to Ask Yourself
Ask yourself:
- If a protest suddenly targets your business, do you have a protocol in place, or is everyone winging it?
- Are you tracking what’s being said about you or your business online, or will you be the last to know when your name starts trending?
- Is your business location or area of operations in an area often used for protests?
- Are your corporate neighbors or partners controversial?
These operational blind spots are fixable, but only if you’re looking for them. Too many times we’ve gotten calls from leaders who waited.
They thought the threat would stay outside. It didn’t. And by then, they weren’t running the business anymore. They were scrambling to protect it.
It’s good to have security experts by your side. The earlier, the better.
Will Your Know What to do When the Situation is Real?
Have you done a dry run? A security plan is good. But is it executable? Do your people actually know what to do?
Panic and stress make people forget fast. If it hasn’t been practiced, reinforced, and built into muscle memory, it’s probably not going to hold.
That’s why you need a live drill, with the exact people who’ll have to act when it counts. Running the play before it’s live increases the chance it will hold up. The goal is to be able to look your people in the eye and say: We’re ready if this hits us.
Because if you can’t say it now, you won’t get to say it in the middle of a crisis.
